African print fabrics, whether woven or wax prints, come in a variety of colours, textures, and patterns. They are usually very vibrant and full of life. When you choose the right combinations for your projects, you’re sure to get a stunning results.

Simply sewing an African print fabric without adding any embellishments or accessories will still give you a beautiful finish because these fabrics are inherently eye-catching.
However, coordinating different African prints can elevate your project, giving it an even more impressive look.
I absolutely love experimenting with African prints when sewing. The great thing about pairing African textiles is that there aren’t any strict rules, which gives me room to be creative and playful.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to pair African print fabrics:
#1 - Pair African prints with solid fabrics
When I pick any African print fabric for a sewing project, I usually start by focusing on the colours in it. I like to choose one or two colours from the print to use as my solid fabric.
Typically, I go for the less dominant colour so the prints don’t clash or overwhelm the design. However, some people prefer using the most prominent colour as their solid, which can also work. It all depends on your taste.
Sometimes, I don’t even choose a colour from the print. Rather, I select a coordinating solid fabric in a complementary shade.
It’s best if the solid fabric has the same texture and weight as the African print—if the print is cotton, I use a cotton solid.
But you can also pair your prints with solids like crepe, satin, lace, silk, or organza.
Pairing prints with solids is my favorite way of coordinating fabrics because they really highlight each other.
#2 - Match African prints with solid white

White is such a versatile colour that pairs beautifully with almost any African textile, even if there’s no white in the fabric itself.
A solid white fabric creates a fresh and clean contrast, making the print pop. This combination is timeless and elegant.
The great thing about pairing African textiles is that there aren’t any strict rules, which gives you room to be creative and playful.
#3 - Pair African prints with another African print
If you have prints with similar geometric or organic patterns but in different colours, you can pair them for a cohesive look.
Another option is to pair fabrics that share the same colour palette but have different patterns. This technique can create a harmonious and balanced outfit.
#4 - Mix multiple African prints

Not everything has to match perfectly! Sometimes, the most interesting designs come from mixing fabrics that don’t share common colours or patterns.
In my culture in Ghana, we have a term for this: the Ewes call it “Sansa” meaning, a combination of different fabrics and yardages.
The key is to ensure all fabrics have the same texture and weight so the final look remains harmonious. Mixing several prints can give your outfit a fun and bold vibe.
Always remember that...
Pairing African textiles is a delightful and creative process, with endless possibilities. Whether you choose to match or mix prints, the goal is to have fun and express your unique style.
So, don't be afraid to experiment—there’s no right or wrong when it comes to creating with African fabrics! Let your creativity run wild, and you're sure to create something extraordinary.
